Burnley kicked off their campaign with a resounding 3-0 win over Southampton. The Clarets seem to be back on track after they had a little bit of a relegation scare last season. The Europa League qualifiers last year messed up their start to the season, but they finished a safe 15th in the end. Sean Dyche would once again look to get back to the top 10 this season.
The transfer window has just been shut, but Burnley are already planning a January move for Crystal Palace’s defender Scott Dann according to the reports from the Sun (August 11, Page 59). The Clarets were linked with him on the final day of the transfer window as well (8 August, page 53).
The Sun reported that Burnley were lining up a £6m move for the defender. But as we know now, the move didn’t transpire, and Dann is still at Crystal Palace. However, one can expect a raid from the Clarets in a few months.
Does Burnley need a centre back?
James Tarkowski and Ben Mee are currently the first-choice defenders for Dyche. However, Tarkowski was closely linked with a move to Leicester City in the summer, and it is not beyond the Foxes to go after him again in the future as they lost the services of Harry Maguire.
Apart from Tarkowski and Mee, Burnley have the likes of Ben Gibson and Kevin Long. Gibson was signed for big money in 2018, but he too was linked with a move away this summer. Gibson has failed to make an impact since he signed and it seems like Dyche doesn’t seem to rate him much.
Thus, the club might need to add a new centre back in the future, and it is only right for the Clarets to keep an eye on replacements when one of their primary defenders are linked with a move away.
What will Dann offer at Turf Moor?
The 32-year-old is an experienced campaigner as he has 150 appearances for Crystal Palace. He has emerged as the mainstay for the Eagles in the past few seasons, and he is strong in the air and reads the game well. We think that he would be a perfect Sean Dyche defender and he will be a good fit at Turf Moor. We believe Burnley can get a proven Premier League player for relatively cheap now as Dann is already in the last year of his contract and Palace might want to sell him in January for a fee so that they do not lose him in the summer for free.
