Rangers are matching Celtic so far in the league as both of them secured a comfortable win last weekend against their rivals. Gerrard has certainly brought Rangers on a level playing field, and all he needs to do is to come up with consistent results every week (yes, that easy, eh!).
The Gers have been effective in the transfer market as they have done most of their business early. Eight new players have come in this season, and quite a few of them have hit the ground running straight away. However, there is still a case for Rangers to sign another striker as they recently allowed Kyle Lafferty to leave the club after terminating his contract with mutual consent.
Gerrard on the area where they are still debating
Gerrard too recently indicated the same that a third striker could be on the cards after securing a 6-1 win against Hibernian. Out of the six, five goals were scored by his two main strikers Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos.
Gerrard recently said (The Scotsman), ”For us to have success here, we can’t rely on one striker. That’s what I told Jermain when I signed him, why I wanted him at the club. For sure, we are going to need both of them firing if we are to have any ambitions of moving forward. There is also a debate that we may need to get a third striker, even though we have other options who can play there.”
It remains to be seen what Gerrard would decide as there is still a few weeks left for Scottish clubs to sign new players. The debate is said to be ongoing, and we think that the club should consider bringing in a new forward who would add depth to the squad.
What kind of forward would be ideal?
Both Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos are slightly similar as they like to make runs between the channels. Morelos indeed provides a lot more intensity and work rate and his general hold up play is also impressive. However, the club can still look to sign a targetman kind of a forward who would bring something different.
There would be games when Rangers struggle to open up defences, and in situations like those, the manager would need to change things up. A targetman will give the team a chance to go more direct, and someone like Morelos or Defoe can make runs off him if Rangers are chasing a goal. Having a plan B will be important in a long season, and a new big forward would give Gerrard a chance to mix things up when things might not be going his way.
