According to AS, Manchester United have finally agreed on personal terms with Christian Eriksen. The Red Devils are willing to offer him wages close to that of Paul Pogba which could make him the third-highest earner at the club. However, they will now have to sort out a deal with Tottenham Hotspur regarding the transfer fee with the Lilywhites unwilling to sell the player to their direct rivals.
Eriksen is one of the best playmakers in the world
After initially moving to Tottenham Hotspur back in 2013, in a €13.5 million move from Ajax, Eriksen has become one of the most consistent players in the Premier League. The Dane was notably involved in 16 goals in his debut season in the Premier League.
Since then, the playmaker has made 277 competitive appearances for the North London giants, during which, he scored 66 goals and provided a whopping 86 assists. His record of 86 assists is more than any other Spurs player in the history of the club. He is also in the top six in the club’s all-time list of top scorers.
Therefore, it’s probably needless to say that Eriksen is one of the world’s best playmakers. And with his contract at Spurs running out at the end of the upcoming season, it could be an excellent opportunity for Manchester United to sign him for a cut-price.
What can he bring to the table?
Eriksen is a predominantly a central attacking midfielder. But, he has shown immense versatility during his time at Tottenham, notably featuring as a wide attacker as well as a central midfielder. And this is indicative of his ability to adapt to any type of situations.
Aside from his versatility, Eriksen is really good at threading passes in behind the backline and combining with teammates in and around the final third. But most importantly, the 27-year-old is proficient in set-pieces, which means he can create scoring opportunities for his team by whipping in dangerous crosses from dead-ball situations.
Additionally, the ex-Ajax prodigy has no significant weaker foot, which gives him a considerable advantage when it comes to nestling through tight spaces and generating passing options for himself.
Is Eriksen a viable target for Manchester United?
Eriksen could revamp the Manchester United creative department, even if Paul Pogba ends up staying at the club. He could even be an upgrade over the Frenchman in many ways, given the fact that he is a full-fledged playmaker. He is more fitted to the number ten role in Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s 4-3-1-2 setup.
Furthermore, Eriksen has a lot of experience of playing in the Premier League, which would make things easier for him when it comes to integrating himself into the new club. And with the 27-year-old available on a cut-price, this is the time for United to strike.
