Rangers will travel to Denmark to take on FC Midtjylland who finished runners up in the Danish top division last season. The Gers had two back to back underwhelming games as they played out a 0-0 draw against Progres and laboured to a 2-1 win against Kilmarnock. Midtjylland are likely going to be their biggest test so far in the Europa League qualifiers, and Gerrard’s men will need to bring their A-game to the occasion.
Peter Lovenkrands, who is Rangers’ academy coach, also believes the same. The Danish coach said (The Scottish Sun), ”I’d say this is their biggest test. A lot of people are probably looking at it and saying, ‘Ah, but it’s only a Danish team’. But this is a team that’s not just been finishing at the top once or twice; it has been consistently doing so in the Danish league for the last five to six years.”
Team News: Jamie Murphy is continuing with his rehab. Matt Polster is currently out with an injury. Apart from these two, Gerrard will have a strong squad to choose from.
Rangers predicted lineup FC Midtjylland
Formation (4-3-3)
Defence
Allan McGregor will start in goal after he missed out on the first league game of the season due to suspension. Connor Goldson is a guaranteed starter at the back. Nikola Katic was found out on occasions against Kilmarnock and Gerrard might go in with George Edmundson in this game who impressed in his first appearance.
Borna Barisic was also below par against Kilmarnock, and Andy Halliday might get the nod ahead of him. James Tavernier is a nailed-on starter in the right-back position.
Midfield
Steven Davis is likely to start in an anchor role in midfield. The veteran midfielder moves the ball well and brings in composure and energy on the pitch. Ryan Jack is expected to partner him in the middle. The other midfield spot could go to new signing Joe Aribo. Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield might miss out.
Attack
Jordan Jones can be effective on the break, and he could make a comeback to the lineup on the left flank. Jones wasn’t in the starting eleven in the last two games. Sheyi Ojo is likely to occupy the role on the right-wing. Ojo and Tavernier need to improve on their link-up play as they looked on different wavelength in the last game. Alfredo Morelos should get the nod ahead of Jermain Defoe to start as the striker.
