According to Express, Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola is plotting a late move to sign Isco. The Catalan is reportedly keen on adding more quality to his team, following other Premier League club’s exploits in the market this summer. But, the Citizens must move swiftly in their pursuit of the Real Madrid playmaker, with the transfer market slamming shut in less than a week. But, does the potential addition of Isco make any sense?
Sane’s departure will be crucial
Even though Isco and Leroy Sane are a different kind of players altogether, it’s likely the Spaniard will be considered as an attacker in general. That means any move for Isco will mainly be dependent on the outcome of Sane’s ongoing transfer saga.
The German international has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich. But, Manchester City have reportedly slapped a massive price-tag on his head, which could be problematic for a Bayern side that has already spent big money in the transfer market.
However, with Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry the only viable options for Niko Kovac in the wide-attacking department, the Bavarians could be tempted to make a move.
A replacement for David Silva?
Isco can be considered as a potential replacement for the ageing David Silva. The ex-Valencia star has become one of the most successful players to play in the Premier League. But at the age of 33, he is nearing the end of his career, thereby accentuating the need for a new attacking midfielder.
Isco, in that regard, could be an excellent option. The Real Madrid star is one of the most technically gifted players in Europe and should integrate quickly to Guardiola’s Juego de posicion style of play. Besides, he also has vast experience at the highest level of football, which could be useful as Man City look to make a mark in Europe this season.
Where does Isco fit it at Manchester City?
Silva will leave the club at the end of this season, which should open up the necessary room for Isco in the Manchester City’s creative department. But should he join the club this summer, it could be a difficult task for the Spaniard to get regular game-time.
He will have to compete with Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, both of who are regarded as two of the best playmakers in the world. Accommodating Isco and de Bruyne in the same lineup is close to impossible unless Guardiola switches to a 4-1-4-1 setup. But, that will disrupt the balance in the holding midfield slot.
Therefore, Isco will likely have to endure another season as a bit-part if he is to join Manchester City this summer. As for the club, itself, they should try their best to keep hold of Sane.
