According to a recent update by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle United are still looking to sign a new right-back and another forward before the transfer deadline next week. In a recent tweet, Downie claimed, “Saint-Max, Willems & Joelinton in the door for NUFC but Steve Bruce still wants a right wing-back and another forward. He’s well stocked at CB and in midfield. Things beginning to take shape for new-look United #NUFC“
The Magpies have already brought in three new players during this summer transfer period but are still looking to rebuild their squad under their new manager Steve Bruce. Thus, it is no wonder that the Tyneside outfit are interested in recruiting more players as they need a strong squad capable of avoiding relegation from the Premier League next season.
Here are three forwards for Bruce to consider in this off-season.
Grégoire Defrel
The AS Roma forward is not a guaranteed starter at the Stadio Olimpico after returning from his loan spell at Sampdoria last season. The Meudon-born striker enjoyed one of the best years of his playing career in the previous campaign when he scored 12 goals and grabbed two assists in 39 appearances for Sampdoria across all competitions.
Defrel has shown in the past that he can succeed at the highest level and so Bruce should consider taking a chance on him ahead of the new campaign.
Daniel Sturridge
The former Liverpool forward is currently a free agent after his contract at Anfield has come to an end earlier this summer. The English frontman might relish at the opportunity of playing in the Premier League once again next season. The 29-year-old still has a few years left in his locker to play at a high level. He has a wealth of experience in the English top-flight and is a proven goal-scorer in the final third. However, his poor injury record has hampered his growth, which will be a cause for concern.
Even then, the pros outweigh the cons of signing Sturridge, so Bruce should think about luring him to St. James’ Park before the start of the new season.
Bas Dost
The Sporting CP centre-back is vastly experienced in European football and is a prolific goal-getter up top. Dost managed to score 23 goals in 35 appearances for the Liga NOS giants last season which goes to show how lethal he can be in front of the opposition goal. Hence, the Magpies should try everything in their power to secure his services this summer.
