According to SportBild, as cited by Inside Futbol, Tottenham Hotspur are falling short of Borussia Moenchengladbach’s hefty valuation for Matthias Ginter. The Premier League club, along with Atletico Madrid are both willing to fork out €35 million for the defender, but the Foals want around €60 million. The German’s current contract at the club expires in 2021.
Ginter’s success at Gladbach
After struggling to make an impact at Borussia Dortmund, Ginter left the club in the summer of 2017. He joined Borussia Moenchengladbach for a fee of €17 million. And he has never had to look back since, having become one of Bundesliga’s top defenders.
The German World Cup winner has been an ever-present figure in the Gladbach over the past two seasons. In fact, he has already made 66 competitive appearances for the Foals.
In the recently concluded 2018/19 campaign, Ginter built a strong defensive partnership with Nico Elvedi, helping Gladbach pose an intense fight for the top four places under Dieter Hecking. His consistent performances at Gladbach have also made him a crucial part of the German national team, and it’s only a matter of time before he leaves the club for a big-money move elsewhere.
What can he offer to the table?
Ginter is primarily known for his doggedness at the back. The 25-year-old is capable of staying up to the player he is marking – something he has really improved on within the past few years. But most importantly, he is quite a versatile defender.
The ex-Freiburg prodigy, aside from his preferred central defensive role, can operate as a holding midfielder as well as a right-back. He is a decent ball distributor as well, though most of his passes tend to be meaningless vertical ones. He notably attained a pass completion rate of 86% last season.
Where does Ginter fit in at Tottenham?
Ginter will be a useful addition to Tottenham, especially with Toby Alderweireld’s future at the club hanging in the balance. But even if the Belgian ends up staying in North London, he, along with Jan Vertonghen, are nearing the final phase of their respective careers, thus accentuating the need of a new defender.
The defensive trifecta of Ginter, Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez can form the new-look Tottenham defence in the future. But having said that, the German’s €60 million is a bit too much given the fact that Mauricio Pochettino will have far better options in the same price range. Hence, the Argentine should drop his pursuit of this Gladbach defender.
