Liverpool faced off against Olympique Lyonnais earlier this evening hoping to end their preseason with a win at the Stade de Geneve. The Reds made a slow start to the game when Alisson Becker was caught napping at the back. The Brazilian keeper gave away a cheap penalty which Memphis Depay successfully converted from the spot.
However, the Merseyside outfit equalised in the 17th minute through Roberto Firmino’s clever finish. Ki-Jana Hoever delivered a wonderful cross into the Lyon box before Joachim Andersen deflected the ball into his own net in the 21st minute. Harry Wilson scored a fantastic goal from long-range in the second half to cap off an excellent 3-1 win for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the match against Lyon.
GK: Alisson Becker – 5/10
The Brazilian goalie made an uncharacteristic error to give away the penalty in the 4th minute. However, he was solid throughout the remainder of the game until he was substituted in the second half.
RB: Ki-Jana Hoever – 8/10
Even though he looked a bit vulnerable in defence, the youngster was an unstoppable force going forward. He played his part in the lead up to Liverpool’s second goal of the match.
CB: Joe Gomez – 6/10
It was a solid evening’s work for the young Englishman.
CB: Dejan Lovren – 7/10
The Croatia international showed his maturity in defence and dealt with most of the Lyon attacks well.
LB: Yasser Larouci – 5/10
He did well to come back from his injury but looked a bit off the pace during the contest.
CM: Xherdan Shaqiri – 6/10
The Swiss midfielder put in a nice little cameo in the first half even though he was made to play out of position.
CM: Adam Lallana – 7/10
The English talent controlled the game well from midfield and distributed the ball accurately in the opposition half.
CM: Naby Keita – 6.5/10
The Guinea international looked sharp but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
RM: Mohamed Salah – 5/10
The Egyptian speedster was a major threat in the first half, but he was selfish inside the Lyon penalty box and squandered some glorious chances to score.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 8/10
The Brazilian forward scored with an exceptional finish which dragged Liverpool back into the game.
LM: Harry Wilson – 8.5/10
The Welsh whizkid scored the best goal of Liverpool’s preseason so far. He proved why he deserves more first-team minutes at Anfield in the coming weeks.
Substitutes:
LB: Adam Lewis – 6/10
He looked confident at the left-back position.
CB: Sepp van den Berg – 6/10
It was another precious few first-team minutes under his belt.
RM: Harvey Elliot – 8/10
Klopp’s new summer signing ran the show after coming on in the second half. He was quite unfortunate not to score or assist a goal today.
ST: Bobby Duncan – 6/10
He set-up Wilson for Liverpool’s third goal of the match.
CM: Fabinho – 7/10
The Brazilian midfield ace commanded the midfield with authority and conviction.
CB: Virgil Van Dijk – 7/10
Always reliable at the back.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 7/10
The Dutch workhorse retained possession well in midfield.
CM: James Milner – 6/10
The English veteran worked hard and put in a tireless shift as always.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 6/10
He sprayed some nice passes from midfield.
CM: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 5/10
It was an underwhelming display from the ex-Arsenal midfield ace.
GK: Simon Mignolet – 6/10
The Belgian keeper hardly had anything to do after coming on in the second half.
ST: Rhian Brewster – 5/10
Not his day today.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 7/10
The Scotland captain came close to scoring in the second half.
ST: Divock Origi – 5/10
The Belgian forward couldn’t make a positive impact on the game.
CB: Joel Matip – 6/10
The Cameroonian centre-back looked assured in defence.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 8/10
The England international put in a few inviting crosses into the Lyon penalty box after coming on in the second half.
