According to a recent report by Mundo Deportivo (translated by the Daily Mail), Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho is set to stay at the Nou Camp beyond this summer due to the lack of interest from other clubs. The same source has revealed that no other clubs are willing to match Barca’s demands for their prized asset.
The Metro had reported earlier this month that Liverpool were interested in bringing back their former player this summer but only for a reduced fee. It seems like Barca are not keen on dropping their asking price. Thus, it looks increasingly likely that Coutinho will stay at Catalunya for at least another season.
Coutinho’s Underwhelming Spell In The Spanish Top-Flight
The Brazil international has struggled to find consistency with his performances on the pitch since completing his move from Liverpool at the start of last year. The Rio de Janeiro born star scored 11 goals while providing five assists in 54 matches for Barca in the previous term across all competitions. The 27-year-old was also the mastermind behind Brazil winning the Copa America in front of their home supporters earlier this summer.
Coutinho is currently playing at his prime but is lacking in confidence. Therefore, a change of scenery this summer could have helped him reignite his career in European football.
What Are The South American Sensation’s Strengths?
On his day, Coutinho can be one of the best playmakers in world football. The La Liga trickster has the vision to pick out a final pass in the opposition half. The Brazilian winger is also a potent goal-threat from long range as he can strike the ball with power or bend it into the opposition net. However, he has also been guilty of not working hard for his side when his teammates are on the back foot.
The Reds should still consider making an offer for their former fan-favourite as he will be able to add some much-needed creativity for Jurgen Klopp’s frontline at Anfield. Liverpool’s fabulous front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have performed well for the Reds over the past couple of seasons. However, the Merseyside club depends on their front three too much to produce the goods at the highest level.
Should Liverpool Still Move In For Coutinho?
A creative wide player like Coutinho would have undoubtedly been a useful asset under Klopp and could have helped the Reds win the race for the Premier League title next season. Hence, it would be wise if Klopp puts in a bid to try and recruit the Brazilian talent in this off-season.
