According to a recent report by L’Equipe (translated by the Metro), Manchester United have failed with their last-gasp attempt to sign Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye this summer. The same source has claimed that Paris Saint-Germain wanted to sign the Senegalese international in January and is on the verge of finally getting their man in this off-season.
This recent development will be a bitter blow for the Red Devils as they try to bring in a new anchorman in midfield. With Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford unclear at the moment, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to bring in a world-class midfielder who will be able to add a bit of steel to his midfield.
Gueye’s Stellar Spell At Merseyside
Gueye would have been an excellent addition to Solskjaer’s squad after he enjoyed a couple of great campaigns at Goodison Park. The Senegalese talent was one of the best players in Marco Silva’s first-team last season when he featured in 35 matches for the Toffees across all competitions. He also had two assists to his name in the previous campaign.
On the defensive end, the 29-year-old made an average of 4.3 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game in the Premier League (stats via whoscored). Gueye has also earned 63 international caps for Senegal and has scored two goals for his country thus far.
He was also an integral member of the Senegalese national side that took part in the African Cup of Nations this month, helping his nation reach the final of the competition. However, Algeria managed to narrowly edge them out in the final to win the tournament, much to the disappointment of Gueye.
What Does The Senegalese Midfield Ace Offer On The Pitch?
Gueye is one of the best defensive midfielders in Premier League football. He is not afraid to make challenges and win possession back for his teammates in the middle of the park. The Senegalese star can provide an added layer of protection to the Everton backline, but he needs to be more productive going forward.
Failing To Land Gueye: Huge Blow For Man United?
Missing out on Gueye will be a massive blow for Solskjaer as he continues to search for new players in the summer transfer market. At 29, the Toffees midfield ace still has a lot to offer on the field and has a few years left in him to play at a high level. Hence, he would have been a fantastic short-term signing for the Red Devils.
The Man United boss will now have to look at other alternatives to help him build a strong squad capable of challenging on all fronts in the upcoming campaign.
