According to the reports from the Scotsman, Robert Gumny remains an option for Celtic for the right-back position. The Hoops have been linked with the Lech Poznan defender in the past when Brendan Rodgers was the manager. Reports mention that the Polish defender will cost somewhere around £5m this summer.
Gumny was close to joining Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in 2018, but the move didn’t materialise. The 21-year-old is already a regular for his club side and is also a u-21 Polish international. The defender is seen as a big talent in his homeland, and that is probably the reason why they value him at £5m.
Celtic’s right back issues
The defender made 21 appearances last season as he struggled with a knee injury. The Hoops recently completed the signing of Hatem Abd Elhamed who is being publicised as a right-back option even though he hasn’t played much in that position in his career. We think that Elhamed at best is going to be a backup option and the Bhoys should look for a more standout right back after they lost three right-sided fullbacks this summer.
What will Gumny bring to the table?
The young fullback is known as a typical modern-day fullback who needs no invitation to move forward. Gumny can even play as a wide midfielder such is his attacking quality. The Polish star is known to have quick feet, and his searing pace can trouble a lot of defenders in the Premiership. Gumny also showcases a terrific work rate as he is full of energy throughout the game.
Concerns for Lennon
The fullback might have a bit of trouble coping with the physicality of the Scottish Premiership. The referees in the division are often lenient as they allow really physical challenges, and that might cause Gumny a bit of a concern.
The fullback is also yet to be tested outside of Poland, so he might take time to settle in at a new club in a new country. That could be a problem for Lennon as Celtic require a right-back who would hit the ground running straight away.
What should Lennon do?
Gumny is worth going after for the reported fee as he can be a real long term option at the club. However, the Hoops might have to be a bit patient with him initially. We think that he is worth investing in as he can turn out to be a reliable option with a little bit of experience.
