According to a recent report by the Daily Mail (via the Daily Mirror), Liverpool are interested in securing the services of Tom Heaton from Burnley during this summer transfer window. However, the same source has also claimed that the Reds will face stiff competition from Aston Villa in pursuit of the Clarets keeper this summer.
Liverpool’s Struggles Without Alisson During Pre-Season
The Reds have only had their new ”signing” Andy Lonergan and Simon Mignolet available during pre-season thus far. Both keepers have made some world-class saves at the back. However, Mignolet made a devastating error against Sporting CP when his blunder gave the Portuguese outfit the lead on Wednesday evening.
Without Alisson Becker, the Merseyside outfit has looked shaky at the back, shipping in eight goals in five pre-season matches thus far. Thus, bringing in a worthy back-up for the Brazilian goalie could help Jurgen Klopp’s team compete on all fronts next season.
Heaton could be an ideal number 2 to Alisson at Anfield as he has already proven his worth in the Premier League over the past few seasons. He is a dominant presence in between the sticks and is consistent with his performances on the pitch. The 33-year-old made 22 appearances for the Clarets last season and conceded 33 goals.
What Will The English Talent Add To Klopp’s Team?
Heaton has quick reflexes and can make brilliant dives to pull off some world-class saves in goal for Sean Dyche’s team. He is a reliable handler of the ball and positions himself well when attempting to make a stop. However, there are some question marks over his ability to distribute the ball accurately from the back.
Will Heaton Be An Ideal Back-Up For Alisson At Anfield?
The acquisition of Heaton will undoubtedly bolster Klopp’s goalkeeping options at the Merseyside club. The Burnley goalie will be a perfect back-up for Alisson as he is a commanding presence in between the sticks.
The English keeper has a wealth of experience in the Premier League so he won’t be afraid to face the pressures of representing an elite club like Liverpool. At 33, Heaton still has a few years left in him to play at a high level. Thus, it makes a lot of sense for the Reds to cash in on Mignolet this summer and move in for Heaton before the start of the new campaign.
