According to a recent report by Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia), Aston Villa have held discussions with Juventus over a potential switch for their goalkeeper Mattia Perin this summer. The same source has mentioned that the Italian shot-stopper was all set to move to Benfica in this off-season, but he failed his medical with the Portuguese outfit over concerns over a shoulder injury.
Perrin’s Rise To The Top Of Italian Football
Perin came through the youth ranks of Pistoiese before he went on to make a name for himself at Genoa. He has also had loan spells with Padova and Pescara during his time at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. The Latina-born talent joined Juventus in the summer of 2018. However, he failed to make a positive impact at Allianz Stadium.
The 26-year-old was sporadically used by Maximiliano Allegri at the Turin club last season. He only managed to make nine appearances for Juve in the previous term, conceding eight goals while keeping five clean sheets in the Serie A.
The Italian keeper needs to switch clubs if he intends to earn regular first-team opportunities in the coming years. It seems like he is surplus to requirements at Juventus. Therefore, a club like Aston Villa could provide him with regular playing time when he returns from his shoulder injury next season.
What Will The Italian Goalie Add To Dean Smith’s Side?
On his day, Perrin can be one of the best goalkeepers in the Italian top-flight. He has outstanding reflexes which enables him to pull off some world-class saves at the back. The Italian prospect can also handle the ball well when put under pressure by the opposition. However, he is not the best distributor of the ball, which can be a cause of concern as Dean Smith prefers his side to play the ball out from the back.
Will Perrin Be The Right Choice For Aston Villa?
The acquisition of a quality keeper like Perrin will undoubtedly bolster Smith’s goalkeeping options at Villa Park. However, the West Midlands side would have to find a way to cope with the Italian’s absence until he comes back from his shoulder injury this fall.
There is no denying that a top-class keeper like Perrin can help the Villans steer clear of the relegation zone in the upcoming campaign. Thus, it makes a lot of sense for Villa to splash the cash on acquiring the Italian’s services this summer.
