According to a recent report by Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur have dropped their interest in securing the services of Juventus striker Paulo Dybala this summer. The same source has revealed that Spurs have turned down the opportunity to bring the Argentine sensation to North London during this summer transfer period.
It is unclear why the UEFA Champions League finalists have chosen to do so. On the positive side, Mauricio Pochettino’s team has already completed the signings of Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais and Jack Clarke from Leeds United earlier this summer.
However, they are still in dire need of a new forward following Vincent Janssen’s exit to join C.F. Monterrey this week (via BBC). Thus, turning down a chance to sign Dybala could prove to be a costly mistake for Spurs. Dybala would have been an ideal partner for Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.
Dybala’s Underwhelming Season In The Italian Top-Flight
The South American talent had a poor season for the Turin outfit after he struggled to find the back of the net consistently at the Allianz Stadium. Dybala featured in 42 matches for the Italian champions last season, registering ten goals while creating five assists across various competitions.
He was far from prolific in front of the opposition goal as he had to share the ball quite often to accomodate Cristiano Ronaldo, who sealed a move to the club last summer. However, there is no doubt that Dybala can be potent goal-threat if he is handed enough freedom to express himself in the offensive end of the field.
What Does The Argentine Prospect Offer On The Pitch?
Dybala is full of tricks when in possession of the ball and can get the better of his marker by using his pace and guile in the opposition half. The Serie A forward can also make some driving runs behind the opposing backline that allows him to wreak havoc in the final third. He is always looking to create openings for others around him. However, one can argue whether the Argentine would be better off showing more ruthlessness inside the opposition penalty area.
Not Signing Dybala: Massive Mistake By Spurs?
A striker of Dybala’s ilk would have significantly improved the quality of Pochettino’s squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Spurs might regret their decision to not recruit him this summer as Dybala could have been the final piece in Pochettino’s Spurs jigsaw heading into the new campaign. Adding a player of the Argentine’s skillset would have undeniably helped the North London outfit secure some silverware next season. While some would have seen him as just a replacement for Harry Kane, we believe Dybala could have complimented the Englishman on the field.
