According to Daily Mail, AFC Bournemouth have cooled their interest in Stoke City’s Jack Butland. They are now ready to pursue Marcus Bettinelli as an alternative to the England international. Bettinelli is also eyed by Aston Villa and the two Premier League sides could potentially indulge in a transfer duel over the services of the Fulham goalkeeper this summer (via Daily Mail).
Bettinelli’s spell at Fulham
Bettinelli is a product of the Fulham youth academy, who was initially promoted to the first-team back in 2012. However, it wasn’t until the 2014/15 campaign, when the 27-year-old finally managed to make his breakthrough at Craven Cottage, featuring in 35 matches in the Championship.
He endured a stop-start spell afterwards, even though the goalkeeper was involved in 26 matches for the Cottagers during the promotion-winning 2017/18 Championship campaign.
However, Bettinelli lost his place to Sergio Rico after initially making seven Premier League appearances last season. He also had to undergo a knee surgery that kept him out for the rest of the campaign as Fulham were eventually relegated back to the second division.
What can he bring to the table?
Bettinelli is primarily known for his massive 1.94m figure that allows him to cover a lot of area in front of the goal. It also gives him a considerable physical advantage when it comes to set-pieces. While he may not be as flexible as other keepers, the Fulham star is an excellent shot-stopper. He can quickly outstretch his arms and is very quick off his line as well – making him a viable option for any Premier League outfit.
Should Aston Villa make a move for Bettinelli?
Aston Villa are in dire need of reinforcements in the goalkeeping department as none of their current crop of goalkeepers have any significant experience of English football. Bettinelli, in that regard, may not be a bad option.
The Fulham shot-stopper has featured in over 100 competitive matches for Fulham. While he may not as tall as Lovre Kalinic, he knows when to come out of his line and make a stop.
Aside from that, Bettinelli’s imposing physical presence in the box could be essential for an Aston Villa side, who will be keen not to concede too many goals from set-pieces next season. And following Fulham’s relegation, the 27-year-old will be available for a cut-price as well – making him an ideal signing for the Villans.
