According to TRT Spor, Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Kasimpasa over the sale of Mahmoud Trezeguet. It is believed that the newly-promoted Premier League club is ready to pay around €11 million, out of which, the selling club will receive 10% from the player’s next sale. Trezeguet’s transfer to Villa Park could be officiated within the coming days.
What does it mean for the Aston Villa attack?
A left-winger by trade, Trezeguet’s addition to the club will make Aston Villa much more dangerous in the wider attacking positions. The Egyptian international can provide direct competition to Andre Green, who became a prominent part of the Villa attack during the backend of last season.
This makes sense as the youngster lacks experience in top-flight football. And should Green indeed struggle to get to grips with the fast-paced nature of the Premier League, Smith will always have a plan B in the shape of Trezeguet. The 24-year-old is quite experienced, having been a regular in the Turkish Superlig while winning 41 caps for Egypt.
Alternatively, Smith could opt for either Jota or Anwar El Ghazi, both of who are capable of featuring in the left-wing slot. Even star player Jack Grealish can occupy the said position, although he’s more likely to feature in his preferred attacking midfield role next season.
Which one is the best option for Smith?
El Ghazi is a guaranteed starter in the right-wing slot, having helped Aston Villa gain promotion to the top flight last season. And this leaves Smith with three potential options in Green, Trezeguet and Jota in the opposite flank.
Jota is most experienced among the lot. The Spaniard has featured in 144 Championship matches throughout his career. But, making 18 La Liga appearances with SD Eibar during the 2015/16 remain his only top-flight experience to date.
As for Green, the 20-year-old made his breakthrough last season, scoring one goal in 18 matches. It remains doubtful whether he will be able to make an impact in the Premier League next season, ideally making Trezeguet the best option for Smith in the left-wing slot.
The ex-Anderlecht winger made 65 Superlig appearances during his two-year stay at Istanbul. He collectively scored 22 goals and provided 18 assists, which is an impressive record.
Even though there is an undeniable difference in quality between the Turkish top flight and the Premier League, Trezeguet is still the most well-established attacker among the current crop of Aston Villa wingers. Hence, we can expect the Egyptian to play a vital role for the Villa as they aim to impress upon their return to the top flight next season.
