According to Daily Star, West Ham United are eyeing a move for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos as they aim to add more reinforcements in the attacking department. They have already assessed two other options in Moussa Marega and Fernando Llorente. But, the club will have to shell out a lucrative deal to sign either of those strikers. As a result, Morelos’ reported £10 million valuation has made him an appealing target for the Hammers.
Morelos’ incredible record at Rangers
A product of the Medellin youth academy, Morelos joined Rangers in a €1.2 million move from HJK Helsinki back in 2017. And the Colombian has turned out to be a bargain for the Gers, having become one of Scottish Premiership’s most lethal attackers.
Indeed, Morelos netted an impressive 14 goals in 31 matches during his debut campaign in Scotland. He also provided six assists, helping Rangers finish third in the league table. But, the 23-year-old took his game to a whole new level last season, having been involved in as many as 25 goals in just 27 league matches.
Morelos’ exploits in front of goal helped Rangers pose a challenge to Celtic for the league title last season. It also earned him a call-up to the Colombian national back in September 2018. He is expected to play a vital role for Los Cafeteros attack in the coming years.
Could his disciplinary record create a problem?
Morelos’ outstanding scoring record at Rangers suggest he could be an absolute steal for West Ham this summer. However, his poor disciplinary record is easily capable of turning the tables.
The Colombian was sent off five times in all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign. He faced suspension for a combined two months due to his bookings and sendoffs last season, which is a genuinely horrifying record.
This won’t go down well with Manuel Pellegrini, who is a stickler for manners and discipline. Morelos, in that regard, could be deemed as an unreliable option due to his bad temper. But at the same time, he will not be the first choice striker for West Ham next season. Also, it’s unlikely he will cause much conflict inside the dressing room. It will probably not be fair to ignore his splendid scoring record either.
Hence, the fact that he is available for just £10 million means that the Hammers should definitely explore the possibility of signing this Rangers star this summer.
