Manchester United took on Leeds United for the first time since 2011 in a pre-season friendly in Perth and emerged the winners by a comfortable 4-0 margin.
The Premier League side dominated at the start as Marcus Rashford hit the post with a low and fizzing attempt early on. Mason Greenwood opened the scoring for the Red Devils as he was found by Aaron Wan Bissaka after a brilliant through ball by Paul Pogba. It seemed like United will run away with the game, but Leeds United managed to come up with some good moves.
Marcus Rashford scored the second on a counter after Romero kept the Manchester side ahead with a brilliant point-blank range save. Ole’s men could have added a third as Daniel James also hit the same post as Rashford on a counter.
Manchester United changed their entire starting eleven for the second 45 minutes. The second half lacked a bit of quality of the first, especially in the final third. Phil Jones scored through a corner and Martial scored from a penalty after Cooper brought down Chong in the box. This secured a thumping win for the Premier League heavyweights
Sergio Romero 8
Largely untroubled but did his job when he was called upon as he made a point-blank save to keep his side ahead.
Eric Bailly 6
Was caught out of position on occasions and was tested defensively. Did an okayish job.
Victor Lindelof 7
Carried the ball well from the back and did his defensive duties well.
Aaron Wan Bissaka 8
Signs are looking bright for the new signing as he provided a lot of attacking outlet from the right. Provided the assist for the opener and did a fine job at the back as well.
Marcos Rojo 5.5
Wasn’t able to get much into the game as most of United’s attacking play was coming from the right-hand side.
Scott McTominay 7
Shielded the backline well and his used his physicality well to dominate the likes of Forshaw and Phillips.
Paul Pogba 7.5
Pulled strings from midfield as he produced some moments of magic. Played a big part in the first goal and took some decent long-range attempts. The Yorkshire side found it hard to deal with Pogba’s strength and drive forward.
Juan Mata 6
Wasn’t much effective playing as an attacking midfielder as Kalvin Phillips kept him quiet for the most parts.
Daniel James 7
Drove the ball forward with intensity and always looked to take on defenders. Could have scored but missed narrowly as he struck the post.
Mason Greenwood 7.5
Finished well for the opener from close range. Played in a free role in the attacking third and looked lively.
Marcus Rashford 9
His pace and trickery was too much to handle for the Leeds defenders, especially on the counter. Scored a fantastic second goal by beating defenders and slotting the ball in calmly.
Substitutes
Joel Pereira 6
Wasn’t tested in goal. His distribution was off the mark.
Chris Smalling 7.5
A comfortable game in defence for the experienced Englishman as Leeds United failed to do much in the second half.
Phil Jones 7.5
Scored from a header early. Did his defensive duties well.
Ashley Young 5
Went into a needless tackle against Forshaw in the end. Misplaced some of his passes down the left.
Nemanja Matic 6
Played in a defensive midfield role but wasn’t tested much.
Andreas Pereira 8
Took one thunderous attempt from long range. Always looked to move the ball forward and played with intensity.
James Garner 7
Did a fine job in the middle of the park. Kept it simple by moving the ball.
Tahith Chong 8
The brightest player in the second half for United as he made things happen with his direct style of play and sharp movement. His pace and trickery was too much to handle, and the youngster managed to win a penalty.
Jesse Lingard 5.5
Was poor with his passing as he often sold his man short. He should have been dominating in this kind of game but was found wanting.
Angel Gomes 7
Linked up play well from midfield and played some impressive through balls.
Anthony Martial 7
Played through the middle and made some good runs. Scored from the spot for the fourth goal.
