According to a recent report by Marca, Barcelona have identified Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo as a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba and are prepared to secure his services in this off-season. The Dominican Republic born talent has been linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this month (via Mucho Deporte).
However, another report from Mundo Deportivo has now claimed that the Catalans are willing to offer Miranda in a player plus cash deal for the La Liga prospect.
It seems like the Reds are set to miss out on Firpo with Barca in pole position to land him this summer. The Spanish sensation enjoyed a fruitful spell in the European Under-21 Championships last month when he helped Spain win the tournament after beating Germany with a 2-1 scoreline in the final.
Firpo’s Productive Season In The Spanish Top-Flight
The 22-year-old had a fantastic campaign for Real Betis in the previous season when he put in some eye-catching performances in the La Liga. Firpo featured in 29 matches for Betis in the last term, finding the back of the net on three occasions while providing five assists on all fronts.
He has also coped well defensively having made an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game for the Spanish side last season (Stats via Whoscored).
What Does The La Liga Prospect Offer On The Field?
Firpo boasts incredible pace, which enables him to complete some dangerous dribbles down the left flank. He is also a capable defender at the back and is a difficult man to beat when left isolated in 1v1 scenarios. Firpo can also contribute by scoring or assisting as evidenced by his attacking returns from last season.
Missing Out On Firpo: Massive Blow For The Reds?
Firpo has all the skillset required to be a success at the Nou Camp. Thus, missing out on him will be a bitter pill to swallow for Liverpool as they continue their search for an ideal back-up for Andrew Robertson. There is no doubt that Barca’s interest will come as a massive blow for Klopp’s chances of bringing the player to Anfield this summer.
The Reds would have to decide whether to compete for Firpo’s signature or find other alternatives in the summer transfer market. Either way, Klopp is in dire need to bring in a new left-back so that he has enough cover at the back heading into the new campaign.
