In a recent interview with the Bild (translated by the Daily Mirror), Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic (who is currently on loan at Hertha Berlin) shed some light on his development and said, “My contract at Liverpool runs until 2023. We [he and Klopp] both saw it in a similar way: I only managed to make the most of 50 per cent of my opportunities in Berlin. Minor injuries knocked me back.
“It’s another reason why I didn’t want to leave. I have unfinished business at Hertha. He also found that it is better for my development to stay in the Bundesliga for another year.
“I always realise that I belong to such a big club and it’s where I want to be. If I play 34 very good games for Hertha, the chance to be a true Liverpool player next year is great.”
Grujic was Jurgen Klopp’s first signing as a Liverpool manager during the winter transfer window of 2016. However, he has struggled to earn enough first-team football at the Merseyside club. So Klopp decided to loan him to clubs such as Red Star Belgrade, Cardiff City and now, Hertha Berlin.
Grujic’s Impressive Loan Spell At Hertha Berlin Last Season
The Serbian midfielder enjoyed a much-improved campaign in the Bundesliga as he put in some dazzling displays for Hertha last season. The 23-year-old made 22 appearances in the German top-flight in the previous term, finding the back of the net five times while earning one assist.
He has also represented Serbia in eight international matches but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his nation.
Grujic needs to find a way to secure more game time at the Olympiastadion Berlin if he wants to have a realistic shot of proving his worth at Anfield next year. The Serbian youngster will have to work hard on improving his game during the upcoming campaign so that he is ready for Premier League football when he returns from his loan spell next year.
Does The Serbian Talent Have A Future At Anfield?
The ex-Red Star Belgrade prospect still has four years left to run on his contract at Anfield. However, there is a chance that he might be sold if he doesn’t step up and start putting in a consistent run of performances on the field. Grujic has already shown a few glimpses of brilliance, but one can argue whether he has the willpower to succeed in the top tier of England.
At 23, the Belgrad-born midfield ace is about to enter his prime. So this upcoming season might be a ‘make it or break it’ year for him as he looks to fulfil his true potential in European football.
