Rangers should be content with the business they have done so far in the transfer window. The club has managed to rope in as many as eight new faces namely Filip Helander, Jordan Jones, Steven Davis, Jake Hastie, George Edmundson, Greg Stewart, Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo. There is plenty of depth in every position, and Gerrard too indicated that his transfer dealings in terms of incoming players are more or less done. Moreover, the Bears haven’t lost any of their players as the likes of Glen Kamara, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos were linked with a move away.
The manager recently said (Daily Record), ”In terms of incomings, we’re near enough done. I always say near enough, you’re never done as a manager, but there won’t be much more activity in terms of incomings. We’ve got quality players in each position, and we’ve got people fighting for places.”
If given an opportunity, we think that Gerrard might want to sign two more players in this window which would make the squad complete. Here are two positions where we believe there is still room for reinforcements.
Left-back– Borna Barisic started the last season brightly, but he struggled for form and injuries later on. A lot is expected out of the Croatian, but if he turns out to be injury-prone again, then this could be a big problem for Gerrard. The club doesn’t have a natural left-back as Barisic’s replacement. Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday are likely to fill in for the Croatian when he is out.
Flanagan did a decent job last season, but he often failed to provide the attacking outlet when playing down the left. As for Halliday, he looks defensively vulnerable when he plays at the back as he is naturally a midfielder. Therefore the club might want to bring in one more specialist for this position.
Striker (Specifically a targetman)– Kyle Lafferty is being linked with a move away from the club, and various reports mention that he is available for sale in the transfer market. Rangers have got two impressive strikers in the form of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, but both of them are a bit similar.
Often when teams defend deep, it is tough to break them down through the middle. For those situations, one might need a targetman kind of a striker who can change the game. Gerrard should look at a striker who can hold up play well and is strong in the air if Lafferty is shipped away this summer.
