Rangers are sitting in a good position in the transfer market as they have completed most of their transfer businesses early. Their latest signing Filip Helander cost them £3m, and that showed the club’s ambition in the transfer market. However, Gerrard also went on to admit that his squad is too bloated right now and there will be some departures.
It seems likely now that the rest of the window for Rangers would be about shipping out some dead woods and finding some good loan deals for their talented young players. Gerrard recently said (The Express), ”We will, naturally, try to move people out the door because the squad is bloated and too big at the moment. Over the coming weeks, we’re hoping to move some on. It’s very difficult to meet everyone’s ambitions in terms of game time because everyone wants to start every game and it’s difficult to do so. If there’s something out there that will suit the player and the club, then I’ll respect that.”
Here are some players who we think are likely to move away in this window.
Eros Grezda
The Albanian winger was brought for £2m from Osijek but his time was curtailed mostly due to injuries. The versatile winger found minimal game time and failed to impress when he was on the pitch. Rangers would be hoping that they can recover what they paid for the winger. The Gers have got plenty of options in the wide region so they won’t be compromising with squad depth by selling Grezda.
Kyle Lafferty
The striker had an impressive 2017-18 campaign for Hearts, and that probably prompted Rangers to go for him again in the transfer market. However, the Northern Irish striker failed to have any impact at the club.
Reports even came out that Gerrard was unhappy with Lafferty’s desire and commitment, and he wanted him to find a new club. The striker still has a year left on his contract so Rangers will hope that they can generate some money by selling the big striker.
Graham Dorrans
Midfield is another area where the Bears have plenty of options, and Dorrans’ exit is also something which Rangers can look at realistically. The talented midfielder has the potential to fight for his place, but he has been struggling with injuries. Also, he is already 32. Therefore shipping him away permanently would be the right call.
Glenn Middleton
This move probably hinges on whether Rangers will be able to get Kent or not. There is no doubt that Middleton would only be sent away on a loan deal this summer. With Jamie Murphy being fit and after the new signing of Jordan Jones, Sheyi Ojo and Jake Hastie; Middleton will find it hard to get game time at Ibrox. Therefore a loan deal for his development should be on the agenda for the club.
From the fringes of the squad, Joe Dodoo and Jason Holt are also said to be available for the right price.
