According to Express, Arsenal manager Unai Emery has asked the club’s hierarchy to make a move for Dani Alves. The Brazilian international is a free agent after seeing out his contract at Paris Saint-Germain last season. And it is believed that Alves is looking for a new challenge with Arsenal interested. The Gunners could, however, face stiff competition from league rivals Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Dani Alves is one of the most successful defenders in the history of football
Alves has enjoyed a decorated career after joining FC Barcelona in a €35 million move from Sevilla back in 2008. In his debut season at the club, the Brazilian was a part of Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning campaign while he also helped his nation win the Confederations Cup in 2009.
The ex-Bahia prodigy notched up almost 400 competitive matches during his time at Barcelona – a successful stint that saw him win six La Liga titles, three Champions League titles and four Copa Del Reys. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup thrice before moving to Juventus in 2016.
At Juve, he secured the domestic double under Massimiliano Allegri before immediately switching to PSG the following year. Alves continued his success at the French capital, securing back to back Ligue 1 titles and one French League cup.
And in the recently concluded Copa America, Alves played a key role in leading Brazil to yet another title, which, in turn, was his second Copa America trophy. He has now bagged 41 trophies throughout his career, which is quite an achievement for any footballer in the world.
Why Arsenal should sign Dani Alves this summer
Arsenal are in a bit of a mess right now, especially in the right-back department. They have already released Stephan Lichtsteiner while both Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson face an uncertain future at the club. That means Hector Bellerin remains the only reliable option in the right-back slot for Emery next season.
Alves, in that regard, could offer some much-needed depth in the said position. Not only that, but he also has vast experience at the highest level of football, which could be useful for an Arsenal side that are set to undergo a massive transitional phase next season.
And finally, it is Brazilian’s winning mentality that could reinvigorate the Gunners’ side that has lacked stability and aggression in recent years, thus making Alves an ideal target for the North London giants.
