According to Le Parisien, as cited by Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur, have received a major boost in their pursuit of Giovani Lo Celso as Real Betis are closing in on the capture of Nabil Fekir. It is believed that the Frenchman is being considered as a potential replacement for Lo Celso and the Argentine could finally be allowed to leave the club, with Spurs still interested.
Lo Celso’s success at Real Betis
Since joining the club on a season-long loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, Lo Celso has been central to Real Betis’ midfield department. The Argentine international made 32 league appearances in his debut season in La Liga, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.
He built a strong midfield partnership with Andres Guardado and William Carvalho at the base of Betis’ formation. And his consistent performances helped Los Beticos achieve a mid-table finish in the league. It also made him a prominent part of the Argentina squad, with the midfielder featuring in all of La Albiceleste’s six matches in the recently concluded Copa America.
Where will Lo Celso fit in at Tottenham?
Tottenham have already roped in the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke this summer. But, the former will mainly be considered as a replacement for Mousa Dembele while Clarke has been loaned back to Leeds United. Hence, the addition of Lo Celso could further strengthen the Spurs midfield without actually creating a conflict in terms of occupying similar positions.
The Argentine can be deployed alongside Ndombele in double-pivot in case of a 4-2-3-1, with Christian Eriksen (if he stays) or Dele Alli featuring as the lone attacking midfielder. Alternatively, Lo Celso can also be deployed as the number ten, should Eriksen leave the club, with Alli and Son operating in wider attacking positions – as mentioned earlier.
Should Tottenham make a move for Lo Celso?
Lo Celso will be a welcome addition to the club amid reports linking Christian Eriksen to a move away from North London. Real Madrid are still believed to be interested in the services of the Danish playmaker. Lo Celso, in that regard, can be considered as a potential replacement for Eriksen in the number ten role.
The Lilywhites are coming on the back of a successful season, and the summer transfer market will allow Mauricio Pochettino to make Spurs one of the most well-balanced teams in Europe and pose a strong challenge for the Premier League title next season. The Real Betis midfielder, to that end, has the quality to help the cause of Tottenham next season.
