In a recent interview with the media at Perth, Australia (via Manchester Evening News), Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that his side has offered a new contract to their number one goalkeeper David De Gea, and he is feeling ‘positive’ about their chances of retaining the Spanish international beyond this summer.
The Norwegian manager provided an optimistic update regarding the Spaniard’s future at Old Trafford when he said (mentioned by Manchester Evening News), “David has had a summer where he’s been negotiating, and we hope we’re gonna get it sorted,
“I’m positive, of course with David I’ve said many times how lucky I am and happy we are to have him in goal.”
The recent update provided by Solskjaer will be a welcome bit of news for the Red Devils supporters as they are desperate to see their beloved club retain the services of De Gea who is still one of the best goalkeepers in European football.
De Gea’s Incredible Spell In The English Top-Flight
Since making a switch to Man United in the summer of 2011, the Spanish shot-stopper has enjoyed a successful spell at the Theatre of Dreams as he put in numerous match-winning displays for them over the past decade.
De Gea has made a name for himself by putting in some strong performances for both his club and country. However, his form had somewhat dipped at Old Trafford last season which threw his long-term future in doubt. However, Solskjaer is prepared to go all out to retain the services of the Spanish keeper.
What Does The Spanish Keeper Offer On The Field?
The 28-year-old has made a total of 362 appearances for the Red Devils, conceding 373 goals while keeping 128 clean sheets thus far across all competitions. He is blessed with sensational reflexes and is also a good handler of the ball. De Gea is an outstanding keeper who has pulled off many world-class saves to save his team’s blushes at the back. He has gradually improved his game and is now a decent distributor of the ball, which makes him a good fit for Solskjaer’s brand of football at Man United.
De Gea’s Contract Renewal: Huge Boost For Solskjaer?
Retaining De Gea to a new, long-term contract could be the best move Solskjaer can pull off in this off-season. The Spanish keeper could also establish his name in the Man United history books forever if he ends up staying at the club for a few more years.
However, at 28, he is currently in his prime, so it would be foolish for him to stay and not give himself the best possible chance to win trophies at other clubs. As far as the Red Devils are concerned, keeping De Gea at the club will be a massive boost for their chances of securing some silverware in the coming years.
