According to the latest reports from the Mirror, Arsenal are set to reignite their interest for Bournemouth’s winger Ryan Fraser after their hopes of landing Wilfried Zaha reached a dead end. The Gunners made an initial enquiry of £40m which was rejected by Crystal Palace. The Eagles had made it clear that they wouldn’t think about selling Zaha for anything less than £80m.
Therefore Fraser represents a more budget friendly option for Emery, and if the Gunners cannot cough up £80m odd, then they need to move on from Zaha’s pursuit. Some reports mention that the former Sevilla manager will only have £45m to spend in the window unless there are departures from the squad.
Fraser’s impressive 2018/19 season
The 25-year-old Scottish international has been with Bournemouth since 2013 but last season was the real breakthrough campaign for the left winger. Fraser contributed with eight goals and 15 assists in all competitions last season, and it is no surprise to see him being linked with a big-money move.
The winger is also in the final year of his contract at the Vitality Stadium so the right offer from Arsenal would probably do the trick.
Fraser is known for his impressive pace and acceleration and what sets him apart is his ability to pick up his head and find the right ball in the final third. Often wingers are guilty of not being productive enough in the final third, but Fraser continued to provide assists regularly and was a goal threat for Eddie Howe’s side last season. The Aberdeen born star is also known for his impressive work rate, and he should suit a manager like Emery.
Arsenal’s need for wingers
Arsenal desperately needs to add options in the wide department as only Alex Iwobi can be classified as an outright winger. They have young and upcoming players like Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Martinelli who can play on the flanks, but they are likely to need more time before they can start regularly featuring at the top level.
The Gunners need to bring in a winger who would slot in straight away in the first team. Zaha definitely seems a better option, but without Champions League football and big money, the London based club are unlikely to sign him. With Fraser entering the final year of his contract, the winger could go for £20m in this window, and that would be something which the Gunners can afford. In terms of quality as well, Fraser has the potential to be a decent acquisition for Emery.
