Gone are those days when Wayne Rooney used to be a key player at Old Trafford. Even though the 31-year-old stills wears the arm-band for the 20-time English champions, it is quite clear that Jose Mourinho does not see the English captain as anything more than a squad player, a one in a three-game player. A player of Rooney’s calibre deserves much better and we do expect him to look for greener pastures sooner or later if things don’t change.
The Mirror reports that Jose Mourinho has clearly told the 32-year-old to look for suitors if he wants regular first-team football and there is already interest from both China and the United States. If the legendary Englishman leaves Old Trafford, United have to look for replacements for him and here are three players whom they should consider.
Marco Reus
Once one of the most talked-about players in Europe not so long ago, Reus’ stock has fallen a lot following a series of injuries over the years. The German international is yet to feature for Borussia Dortmund this season and with Thomas Tuchel’s new look young side doing decently, Reus might find it hard to get his place back in the team.
Commercially saying, Reus would be a great signing for any club and Dortmund might be tempted to cash him in if the right offer is tabled. A proven goal scorer at the big stage and someone who can play anywhere in the final third, Reus would be a like for like replacement for Rooney.
Edinson Cavani
The PSG star has been in scintillating form since the start of the season and has scored 13 goals in all competitions from12 games this season. In terms of playing style, Cavani is a similar player to Rooney. Both work their socks off for the team. Cavani shares a brilliant chemistry with Zlatan Ibrahimović having played together for PSG and a reunion can prove to be beneficial for both.
Antoine Griezmann
The 25-year-old is right now one of the best players in world football and it is a public knowledge that United admire him highly. The Frenchman is a player who can play up front, on either flank or even as a number ten and wherever he is deployed, he scores a hell lot of goals.
To get the golden boy of Atletico Madrid, United might need to break the world transfer record once again but they do have the money. But is money enough to convince the French superstar to join the sinking ship famously known as ‘Manchester United’? Only time will tell.
