According to the latest reports from Daily Record, Celtic are ready to come up with a new offer for Brentford’s midfielder Romain Sawyers. Celtic’s initial bid of £1.5m was rejected, and they are preparing to launch a £2.5m bid now to lure the Saint Kitts and Nevis international.
Why Celtic need a midfielder?
It is said that Neil Lennon is keen to add atleast one more attack-minded midfielder this summer after the move for David Turnbull failed to come to fruition. Future of Australian playmaker Tom Rogic is also uncertain, and the boss has identified Sawyers as someone who fits the bill.
Along with Rogic, Olivier Ntcham’s future is also up in the air. Therefore the club needs to bring in a dynamic midfielder for the next season as Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor might be the only players who could open up defences and score regularly from midfield.
Celtic are said to be keen to get a deal done for the Brentford skipper. Sawyers came up from West Bromwich Albion’s academy. He has been at Brentford since 2016 and established himself as a crucial member of their first team. He was signed by Dean Smith at Brentford and Sawyers had a previous spell at Walsall when Smith was their manager.
A good bet for Celtic?
The 27-year-old is traditionally an attacking midfielder, but he can fill in as a central midfielder as well when required. Sawyers made 46 appearances in all competitions last season and contributed with seven assists. He might not have found the back of the net, but he did an excellent job in creating chances for his team-mates.
The midfielder is known for his quick feet and dribbling skills which enables him to get out of tight spaces. His close control skills are often immaculate, and he uses his strength and body well to shield the ball. He is also a capable passer of the ball, and he can open up defences with some great through balls.
Sawyers might want to improve his finishing a bit in the final third as managers would often want attacking midfielders to score ten odd goals a season. The 27-year-old is an experienced campaigner, and he can be a decent bet for the Hoops if he manages to settle in at Celtic. The Birmingham born midfielder has entered the final year of his contract so we think that there is a good possibility that the Bees might part ways with him if they are offered the right price.
