According to SportBild, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Lukas Klostermann amid reports linking Hector Bellerin to a move away from Emirates Stadium this summer. Atletico Madrid reportedly courts the Spaniard, and big money move could be on the horizon.
The Spanish giants, however, are also said to be keen on signing Klostermann, which could force the two clubs into indulging themselves into a transfer duel for the RB Leipzig defender this summer.
Klostermann’s impressive campaign at RB Leipzig
After a slow start to his career in the Bundesliga, Klostermann has become a vital part of the RB Leipzig backline. Especially in the 2018/19 campaign, the German enjoyed a great season, where he helped his club retain the best defensive record in the league.
Klostermann’s impressive performances in the German top flight earned him a deserved call-up to the national side back in March. He also starred for the Germany Under-21 squad in the recently concluded European U-21 Championships, helping Die Mannschaft reach the very end of the coveted competition, only losing out to Spain in the final.
What can he bring to the table?
Klostermann is advertised as an attacking minded right-back, who can offer pace and dynamism on the flanks, much like Bellerin. But, what sets him apart from other fullbacks is his aggression and willingness to win back possession for his team. He has the patience as well as the skill to steal the ball without jeopardising his team’s defensive shape by receiving any unnecessary bookings.
The German international thrives in a high-pressing system, where his tenacity and courageous style of play can be utilised very well. The 23-year-old is also a versatile player, who can cover almost all areas of the defence, including the centre-back role. And this makes him a handy defender for any manager.
Should Arsenal make a move for Klostermann?
Klostermann would be an excellent signing for Arsenal, should Bellerin end up leaving the club this summer. The young fullback has the quality to replace Bellerin, and his pace, tenacity and work-ethic could even make him an upgrade over the Spaniard, provided he can play to his full potential.
The Leipzig defender has already shown that he is capable of playing at a higher level of football and his aggressive style of play could be ideally suited to the fast-paced nature of the Premier League, making him a tailor-made fit for the Gunners as they attempt to refresh their squad ahead of the new season.
