According to a recent report by the Sun, Manchester United are plotting a move to secure the signature of Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn during the ongoing summer transfer window. The same source has mentioned that the Villans will demand a fee in the region of £50m for their prized asset with the Red Devils desperately trying to rebuild their squad ahead of the new campaign.
McGinn’s Stellar Rise To The Top Of English Football
McGinn had enjoyed a fantastic season at Villa Park after putting in a series of impressive displays under Dean Smith’s tutelage in the previous campaign. He was instrumental behind Aston Villa’s promotion push and managed to help them qualify to the Premier League via the EFL Championship playoffs in the last term.
The Scottish midfielder won the players’ player as well as the fans’ player of the year awards last season after joining from Hibernian for just £2.75m in the summer of 2018.
The Glaswegian midfield ace made 48 appearances for the Villans in the previous term, scoring nine goals while grabbing 12 assists in all competitions. The former St. Mirren prospect has also secured 15 international caps for Scotland thus far.
However, the jury is still out on whether he can prove his worth at the highest level, which makes this a slightly risky move for the Red Devils. The 24-year-old is primarily a central midfielder who can also feature on the left wing if required. McGinn’s versatility and goal-threat make him a useful asset for Dean Smith’s team, so it will be a big blow for Villa if they end up losing him to Man United before the start of the new campaign.
What Will The Scotland International Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
McGinn is quick and agile enough to dribble without losing possession of the ball from midfield. He is physically strong and is quite aggressive in the way he approaches the beautiful game. He has also added goals and assists to his game last season which has only raised his stock in English football.
The Scottish midfield ace will not only improve the quality of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team at Old Trafford but will also provide more competition for places within the Man United squad. However, the £50m transfer fee seems a bridge too far. Maybe if the price is closer to £20m-£22m, there could be a realistic chance of United making this deal happen.
