According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, Manchester United are set to table a bid of £15m plus add-ons to secure the signature of Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff during the summer transfer window. The same source has mentioned that the Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to make the Magpies talent his third signing of the summer following the arrival of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Longstaff’s Impressive Season With The Magpies
Longstaff graduated from Newcastle United’s youth academy after battling his way up the team’s junior ranks. He also got some first-team experience under his belt during his loan spells with Kilmarnock and Blackpool. The English prospect finally managed to break out as a first-team starter under Rafael Benitez’s stewardship last season.
Longstaff made a total of 26 appearances for the Tyneside giants in the previous term, registering three goals while creating six assists in multiple competitions.
The Norths Shields born sensation displayed a lot of maturity with his performances at the centre of the park in the previous campaign which helped the Magpies avoid relegation to the EFL Championship. However, the youngster suffered a severe knee injury back in March, which could be a cause for concern for Man United down the line if they end up acquiring him this summer.
What Will The English Midfield Ace Bring To Old Trafford?
The 21-year-old has decent pace and is always willing to work his socks off for his teammates in midfield. He has also started scoring and creating goals from midfield, which is always a positive for a young player like him. However, Longstaff still has a long way to go before he can be a world-class talent in the English top-flight.
The potential acquisition of a player of Longstaff’s incredible potential will undoubtedly improve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad at the Theatre of Dreams. He will add more competition for the likes of Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira as the duo are also not guaranteed starters in the Man United first-team.
Is Longstaff The Ideal Choice For Man United?
Maybe, it would be wise if the Red Devils focussed on addressing some of their most immediate concerns rather than recruit another talent with the future in mind. However, there is no doubt that Longstaff would be the right choice for the Reds of Manchester if they are looking to build long-term under Solskjaer’s stewardship.
