In a recent interview with Tuttosport (translated by Liverpool Echo), Real Betis left-back Junior Firpo shed some light on his future and said, “The market? I don’t think about it, as I’ve said many times before, we’re playing for a very important trophy.
“Playing in Italy in the future? It’s a good championship, there are important and historical teams.
“I also like to experience other countries, but first I want to think about finishing the European Championship.”
The Metro reported earlier this month that Liverpool were facing stiff competition from Manchester United in pursuit of the La Liga full-back this summer. However, the Liverpool Echo has denied those claims by stating that the Reds have no interest in recruiting the Spanish defensive ace during this ongoing summer transfer period.
Firpo has enjoyed a successful spell in the European Under-21 Championship recently where he has helped his nation, Spain qualify for the final after defeating France with a 4-1 scoreline on Thursday night.
Firpo’s Impressive Spell In The Spanish Top-Flight
The 22-year-old experienced a terrific season with Real Betis in the previous campaign after putting in some dazzling displays in the left-back position. Firpo had featured in 29 matches for the Spanish side last term, registering three goals while creating five assists across all competitions. On the defensive end, he made an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game for Betis last season (Stats via Whoscored).
What Are The Spanish Talent’s Strengths?
The La Liga full-back is speedy and agile, which allows him to make some lung-bursting dribbles down the left wing. He is also a reliable defender at the back and can be a difficult prospect to beat in 1v1 scenarios. Firpo has also added a few goals and assists to his name last season which has raised his stock in the European transfer market. The Spanish talent has all the skillset required to be successful in the Premier League so the Reds would be foolish not to attempt to sign him this summer.
Should Klopp Make A Move For Firpo?
Firpo would have increased competition for Andrew Robertson for the coveted left-back berth in Klopp’s first-team. The departure of Alberto Moreno on a free transfer earlier this summer has left a big hole in Liverpool’s squad so they are in dire need of bringing in a fresh face for the left-back position who can give Robertson a run for his money next season.
The Betis youngster has incredible potential and would fit in well at Anfield as long as he is willing to wait for his chance in the first-team. However, Klopp’s lack of interest suggests that the Reds might be looking elsewhere in search of a new left-back in this off-season.
