Steven Gerrard is yet to deliver something tangible in terms of trophies at Rangers, but he hasn’t done his reputation any harm in the last one year at Ibrox. Many would agree to the fact that the Englishman has brought Rangers on the cusp where they can challenge Celtic now. Even last season, Rangers were neck and neck with Celtic in the title race until January. Not to forget, the Gers also made it to the Europa League group stages by winning four gruelling round of qualifiers.
Even in the transfer market, Gerrard’s influence has been there for everyone to see. It was no surprise to see him using his connections with Liverpool to bring in talented players on loan. Ryan Kent was the standout signing from the last season, and the manager is once again keen to have him for another year. Recently, various reports did the round that it was Gerrard’s influence that made Joe Aribo choose Rangers even though there was interest for him from various quarters.
Gerrard In demand
Frank Lampard is likely to take over the managerial role at Chelsea. It’s not likely to be a fairy tale return for Gerrard as Lampard is set to have, but Newcastle United now wants him after they failed to tie down Rafael Benitez on a new contract.
Latest reports from the Telegraph states that the Magpies have drawn up a shortlist of possible managers and it is headed by the likes of Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard and Mikel Arteta.
Should Rangers fans be worried?
Recently Gerrard was even linked with a move to Derby County. However, Gerrard brushed off those rumours by saying, ”Yes, I’m aware of it (Speculation of him becoming Derby manager), but there’s nothing to say on it. I’m very happy. It’s a privilege to be the Rangers manager, and my focus is on the coming season. It’s very similar to when there is noise around players.”
It was probably easier to turn down any approach from Derby Couty, but the Newcastle United job is definitely a more prestigious one. However, Gerrard doesn’t seem like a manager who would leave something in between for a more lucrative offer. The former England captain was known for his loyalty during his playing days as he was wanted by numerous big clubs while playing for Liverpool.
He wasn’t able to fathom putting on a jersey of any other team apart from Liverpool. Gerrard’s latest interviews, demeanour and approach all indicates that he is here to stay at Rangers for the next season. His transfer plans are already in motion as the Gers have made some smart acquisitions. Even though Newcastle United are a club with a rich history and a big reputation, there is no way that the former Liverpool captain would pull off a Brendan Rodgers.
