According to Estadio Deportivo, Everton are among the clubs linked with a move for Borja Iglesias. The Espanyol forward hinted that he might leave Catalonia this summer with West Ham United, Valencia and Real Betis all keen on securing his services. And the report claims that the Toffees have been trying to sign him since January.
“The decision is not mine alone, my family, my friends and, above all, my agents, who know about this and at times are able to serene you.” Iglesias said when asked about his future.
Iglesias’ success at Espanyol
Iglesias initially moved to Espanyol in a €10 million move from Celta Vigo last summer. And since then, the 26-year-old has become a vital part of his team’s offensive unit. Indeed, the Spaniard scored a whopping 17 goals in 37 games – making him the seventh most prolific attacker in the league.
His service in front of goal was critical in helping Espanyol finish the campaign in the seventh position, but with head coach Rubi leaving for Real Betis next season, Iglesias’ future at Catalonia remains in doubt.
The 49-year-old was key to Iglesias’ rise to prominence this past season, and it will be interesting to see whether or not the forward remains put at Espanyol this summer despite the departure of their revered coach.
What can Iglesias offer to the table?
Iglesias is a potent striker, whose lethal finishes makes him one of the most sought after players in Spain. He is a technically astute attacker, and like any modern day striker, he can move into deeper position and pick up balls from midfield.
However, it’s his excellent first touch that makes him a class apart when compared to most Premier League attackers. So much so that he can even create chances for his team just by flicking the ball in behind the defence, with only one touch.
Should Everton make a move for Iglesias?
It’s probably needless to say that Everton are in need of a reliable goalscoring attacker. Cenk Tosun hasn’t had the best of time in the Premier League while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has failed to find the back of the net consistently, despite performing well.
As a result, the extra cynosure has been on Richarlison in terms of goalscoring. Iglesias, to that end, can provide Marco Silva with a reliable option up front. The 26-year-old has already impressed in the Spanish top flight, and if he can replicate his performances in the Premier League, he will surely be a great coup for the Toffees this summer.
