According to France Football, as cited by Talksport, Manchester United are keen on the services of Wissam Ben Yedder. The Sevilla striker has been identified as one of Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s top targets as he prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku next season. The report claims that Ben Yedder has a release clause of €40 million and the Red Devils could face stiff competition from both FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Ben Yedder’s success at Sevilla
Ben Yedder has become a vital part of the Sevilla attack after initially joining the club in a €9.5 million move from Toulouse in 2016. The Frenchman has already netted 70 goals in 138 matches for Los Nervionenses in all competitions, which is a way better record than what he had at Toulouse.
While Ben Yedder’s scoring tally wasn’t particularly impressive in his first two seasons at the club, the 28-year-old enjoyed a superb 2018/19 campaign, in which he was involved in 41 goals in 54 matches across competitions. He plundered 18 goals in La Liga, helping Sevilla finish sixth in the league.
What can Ben Yedder bring to the table?
Unlike most centre-forwards, Ben Yedder is a technically gifted attacker, who has exquisite control on the ball. His neat footwork allows him to take on defenders and also work his way around tight spaces. And this makes him quite a productive player when it comes to threading in clever balls in and around the final third. He has notably averaged 1.3 key passes per game this past season.
However, what makes Ben Yedder such a sought after striker in Europe is his quick decision making and excellent composure. When on the ball, he can quickly evaluate his passing options and more often than not, comes out with the ideal pass. As a result, the 28-year-old has mustered nine assists in the league, which is quite impressive for a striker.
Should Manchester United make a move for Ben Yedder?
Ben Yedder could be an exciting option for Manchester United given the unique qualities he can offer on the table. As discussed earlier, the Frenchman is a technically gifted forward and could combine well with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in the final third.
He is also a bonafide goalscorer and is capable of adding more bite into the United attack next season. But most importantly, it is his mobility and ingenuity in the attack that arguably makes him a better fit when compared to someone like Lukaku.
And for a fee of just €40 million – he is a considerably cheaper option for Man United in their bid to replace the Belgian, who has been linked with a move to Italy, thus making Ben Yedder an ideal target for the Red Devils.
