According to the latest reports from Sky Sports, Portsmouth’s winger Jamal Lowe recently told his club that he is looking to move away from Fratton Park in the summer. Leeds United are one of the clubs who have been linked with the League One star along with the likes of Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic.
Reports (The Mirror; June 15-Page 73) had earlier emerged that Championship outfit Millwall had two bids rejected for the English winger. The Whites are in the market to sign wingers, and this should come as a piece of good news for them as one of their plausible targets is willing to move away from his club.
Kenny Jackett is said to be keen to keep hold of him, but that seems unlikely to happen now that the player has made his intentions clear. Lowe is going to enter into the final year of his contract soon, and Leeds United have a good chance of luring him to Elland Road.
Why Leeds United need wingers?
Lowe is a right winger, and that position was occupied by Pablo Hernandez last season. The Spaniard was impressive in his performances, but he usually looked to come inside and affect play from central areas. He doesn’t have the pace anymore to run the defenders ragged, and neither is he getting any younger. Young star Jack Clarke who could have slotted in on the right flank as a makeshift option is also being linked with a move away from the club. Therefore the club should definitely look to add options on the right wing.
Will Lowe be a good signing for the Whites?
The 24-year-old was Portsmouth’s top scorer as he managed to score 17 goals last season which helped the Pompey reach the playoff semifinals. Leeds United often dominated their game and enjoyed plenty of possession, but they failed to take their chances in the final third. Lowe’s performance and impact in the final third suggests that he would be an upgrade for Marcelo Bielsa.
Lowe likes to take on defenders as he is direct in his approach and he has that pace and flair to his game which can be tough for the opposition defenders to contain. His work rate is also worth mentioning as the winger often tracked back to help Portsmouth defensively.
Can United sign him?
Lowe should come within Leeds United’s price range. They should be able to beat their other competitors as well for the winger as the Whites are going to be one of the favourites to move to the Premier League in the next season. With the latest report emerging that the player wants a move away from the club, Bielsa should step up his pursuit for the 24-year-old.
