According to the latest reports from the Express, Celtic are set to rival Rangers for the signature of Derby County’s fullback Max Lowe. Around a month back, reports (Daily Record) had emerged that Gerrard had contacted Frank Lampard to inquire about their left back Lowe. It is believed that Celtic have already held initial talks about Lowe with the Rams.
It is not surprising to see Celtic joining the race for a left back as Arsenal are heavily interested in signing Kieran Tierney. Lowe had two six months loan spells at Aberdeen, and he impressed playing as a left back for the Dons in the last season. Therefore it is probably logical to see the two Scottish giants going up head to head to sign this English fullback.
It is yet not clear whether Derby would sell Lowe in the summer as their managerial situation is yet not sorted. As long as there is no confirmation of who will manage for the next season, a decision on Lowe’s future is unlikely to come.
Do Rangers need someone like Lowe?
The defender made 28 appearances in the Premiership last season and looked at home playing for the Dons. Rangers signed Borna Barisic for decent money in 2018, but the Croatian failed to impress in the left back role. He started well, but after his various injury issues, he struggled for form and fell way down the pecking order even when he became fit.
Gerrard went on to use Andy Halliday, and Jon Flanagan in the left back role for the most parts last season. Even though neither of the duo is a natural in that position, they were keeping Barisic away from the first team. So that showed that the manager had lost confidence in Barisic.
Reports had even emerged earlier that Gerrard might look to sell the Croatian as he was unhappy with his commitment and desire, but the 26-year-old later went on to claim that the media blew things out of proportion.
Should Rangers step up to sign Lowe?
Rangers have been motoring on in the transfer market so far as they have secured one signing after another. We want to think that Barisic deserves another go at Rangers. He showed some bright sparks initially and maybe because of injuries and playing in a new league, he struggled later on in the season. It all depends on whether Gerrard sees it that way or not. If the manager thinks Barisic is a liability, then he should step up his pursuit for Lowe.
