Recently reports from the Scottish Sun widely did the round that Celtic had made a £5m bid for Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna. However, reports from the Evening Express suggests that the Hoops made no bid. They cite their source from the club itself.
It is no surprise to see Celtic getting liked with the Scottish international again. The Hoops have been after the 22-year-old centre back for quite some time now. We feel that Celtic should finally look to bring this transfer home as they desperately need to sign a top centre half for the next season.
Why Celtic need defenders?
Dedryck Boyata might have left the club on a sour note, but he was a dominant figure at the back for quite some time. The Belgian defender will soon need to be replaced by the club. They are also going to lose out on Filip Benkovic as his loan spell is about to expire. It remains to be seen whether the Hoops can land him again on loan from Leicester City.
Even if they do, they still must go in the transfer market to sign a defender and McKenna is likely to be a good fit for the club.
Some reports mention that the defender would cost as much as £10m, and many might feel that he isn’t worth that much. However, we would like to make a case for how he can be a decent signing for that money.
Why should Celtic target McKenna?
The 22-year-old is one of the best defenders in the Premiership as he is reliable and robust in challenges and is equally adept at playing out from the back. He probably needs to cut down on his rash decision making, but at 22, one would term him as more than a handy talent. There is no doubt that in terms of abilities, he would be a good fit for the Hoops.
The main question here is the price tag, and we feel that he is definitely worth it. Clubs like Aston Villa, Hull City, were also interested in him, and the Dons reportedly rejected a £7m bid for him last summer from the Villans. We feel that if Celtic can sign him for £10m and the defender goes on to have two-three good seasons at Parkhead, then his valuation would easily double up or be even more in that time. Therefore there is no doubt to us that Celtic would be able to recoup all the amount for the defender if they decide to sell him in the future and they shouldn’t worry about paying £10m for McKenna.
