According to Corriere Dello Sport, as cited by Football Italia, AC Milan are prepared to offer Franck Kessie in their attempt to sign Lucas Torreira from Arsenal. The Rossoneri have identified the Uruguayan as their top target and would prefer a straight swap deal between the two players.
But, they might be willing to throw additional cash too as the Gunners value Torreira considerably higher than Milan’s €30 million valuation for Kessie. Torreira is valued around €50 million, and he is considered as a vital part of the Arsenal setup. But, the ex-Sampdoria midfielder is reportedly finding it hard to settle into life in England and would prefer a return to Italy.
A tactical rundown of Kessie and Torreira’s style of play
There are many similarities between the two players, particularly with their passing as both of them are adept in helping their respective teams with the transition from defence to midfield. Torreira likes to stay deep and pick up balls from defenders. There are usually a lot of short passes involved in the Uruguayan’s passing method, but he is an excellent ball carrier, allowing him to operate in half spaces.
Kessie, on the other hand, uses his imposing physique and high awareness to not only help his team during defensive phases but also ease the build-up play. He prefers to play important, meaningful passes, though that takes a significant toll on his overall accuracy as opposed to someone like Torreira.
Both are energetic midfielders who play a vital role in the midfield press, although Kessie gets the upper hand due to his physical superiority. Torreira, however, is a better reader of the game and can cut off passing lanes by making smart interceptions in midfield.
Both the players like to go forward as well, though the Uruguayan’s better composure on the ball allows him to be more effective in the final third. But at the same time, Kessie can swiftly create chances with his laser focussed passes. The Ivorian notably averaged 1.3 key passes per game as opposed to Torreira’s 0.5.
Can Kessie replace Torreira?
Kessie might not be a bad replacement for Torreira. In fact, we would say that if such a deal is on the table, then Arsenal should jump at the opportunity. The AC Milan star is a dogged midfielder while his technically astute nature will help him integrate to Unai Emery’s tactical setup at Arsenal. He is also younger of the two and could find it easier to thrive in the Premier League due to his physical prowess.
However, it’s imperative the Gunners demand additional cash along with Kessie if they are to sell Torreira. Arsenal’s €50 million valuation for the 23-year-old means they could get at least €20 million plus Kessie, which should give a considerable boost to Emery’s slender transfer kitty this summer.
