According to Yahoo Sport France, Everton have made contact with OGC Nice regarding the possibility of signing Wylan Cyprien. Marco Silva will be keen to sign a few central midfielders due to the lack of depth in Everton’s midfield department, and the 24-year-old star seems like an exciting option for the Toffees. But, what is the Frenchman all about?
Cyprien’s topsy turvy spell at Nice
Cyprien has been a part of the OGC Nice side since 2016 when he made a €6 million move from Lens. The midfielder played 29 matches during his debut campaign at the club, notably being involved in 11 goals.
But, his importance at Nice took a considerable dip the following season, primarily due to the emergence of Jean-Michael Seri. In the end, the Frenchman ended up playing only 943 minutes of league football.
However, Cyprien once again became a vital part of the Nice midfield this past season. He made 29 appearances and was involved in six goals as Les Aiglons finished seventh in the league table.
The 24-year-old’s current contract at the club expires in 2021 and having missed on Champions League football next season; Nice might be willing get rid of the midfielder for the right price.
What can Cyprien offer to the table?
Cyprien is an attack-minded central midfielder, who is blessed with immense technical quality. Much like Mario Gotze, the Frenchman likes to deceive the opposition defender with clever flicks and plays quick one-twos with teammates in and around the penalty box. He tends to move inside the box if the ball is in a wider position, which is an invaluable asset for a modern midfielder.
The Nice star has averaged over two key passes while attempting 1.6 shots from outside the box per game this past season. And that is indicative of not only his chance creation but also his long-range shooting prowess. He has also attained a respectable pass completion rate of 87%.
Should Everton make a move for Cyprien?
Cyprien should be a valuable addition to the Everton midfield that has appeared overreliant on the services of Idrissa Gueye. And despite the likely return of Andre Gomes this summer, the 24-year-old will be able to provide some much-needed competition in central midfield.
Furthermore, he can also be deployed in the attacking midfield role, meaning Cyprien can provide excellent cover not only to Gueye and Gomes but also to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the number ten slot. At the age of 24, he could be a smart long-term addition for the Toffees as they aim to kickstart a new era under Marco Silva next season.
