According to the Danish news outlet, BT, Manchester United are keeping an eye on Genk defender Joakim Maehle. The right-back has impressed the onlookers with impressive performances for his club this past season and is being considered as a potential alternative to top target Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
United are apparently in talks with Crystal Palace over the potential arrival of the English defender. But, they could set their sights on Maehle should the negotiations fall through.
Maehle’s rise to prominence
Maehle initially joined KRC Genk back in 2017 in a €1.3 million move from Aalborg BK. And after a promising debut campaign in Belgium, the Dane has now become a vital part of the Genk backline, having made over 60 appearances during his ongoing two-year spell at the club.
The 22-year-old was an ever-present figure in the Genk back-four during the 2018/19 campaign, featuring in 30 league matches. He scored two goals and provided an impressive five assists, helping De Smurfen secure the Jupiler Pro League title.
As a result, Maehle has attracted the interest of a host of clubs across Europe, including Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. And a move away from Belgian could be on the horizon despite Genk’s initial wish to keep hold of the player.
What can Maehle bring to the table?
Maehle is an attacking fullback, who is blessed with immense technical quality. He is an excellent passer of the ball while his agility and pace help him provide extensive attacking support from the flanks. The Genk star is like a modern day fullback, who moves in-field and plays through balls in behind the defence or link-up with teammates rather than whipping in crosses into the box.
Defensively, the 22-year-old is an incredible reader of the game, and his main priority is to intercept passes rather than making tackles. He is also a physical defender – making him a well-rounded fullback.
Should Manchester United make a move for Maehle?
Maehle is undoubtedly a gamble, given his lack of experience at the highest level of football. It is also doubtful whether he can replicate his performances in the fast-paced nature of the Premier League. But, if he does, he will be a cheaper and more flexible alternative to Wan-Bissaka.
The 22-year-old is a tactically astute defender, meaning he is more likely to thrive under the attacking brand of play Manchester United have implemented under Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer. And given his technical ability, Maehle could combine better with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata on the far side.
