Celtic are making slow but steady progress in the transfer window. They are expecting an array of exits this summer and therefore, must rope in able alternatives to maintain their supremacy in Scottish football. A few negotiations are in place already as the Hoops must be aiming for their ninth Premiership glory despite Rangers’ resurgence under Steven Gerrard.
They, meanwhile, have received a major boost in pursuit of long-term target Edson Alvarez. The 21-year-old defender has been in Celtic’s radar for a while as his move to Parkhead did not materialise in January even though the Glasgow giants offered a fee in the region of £5m (ESPN) to his current employers Club América.
According to Bolavip, the Mexico international is likely to leave Liga MX amid interest from Europe with Celtic and Wolves both interested in wrapping up a deal for the young sensation. Alvarez only extended his contract at America back in May. However, their charismatic manager Miguel Herrera has fueled the speculations admitting a potential exit could happen by the end of August.
“I see him far from staying, he is a player who is attracting the attention of many people in Europe. But as long as he does not leave, I still consider him inside the club. I reiterate, he is an attractive player because of his age and his form.”
The young prodigy progressed through the academy ranks of Las Águilas before making it to their first-team at the age of 19. He soon grabbed a regular role in the heart of their backline and flourished furthermore under Herrera to become one of the most promising prospects for his club as well as the country.
Alvarez has earned 23 senior caps so far for El Tri and made more than 100 competitive appearances for Club América. Despite being a centre-half, he is capable of featuring as a right-back, and also deep down the midfield to screen the defence. While Wolves should be favourites to land the Mexican due to their financial supremacy, the transfer to Celtic would see him grabbing a key central defensive role in place of Dedryck Boyata who left for Hertha Berlin upon expiration of his contract.
The youngster is lauded for his technical traits, ability to retain possession under pressure along with a strong presence in the air. He prefers to play the ball out from the deep and control the rhythm banking on his calmness and composure. His inclusion would galvanise the Bhoys and restore their resilience following last season’s frailty at the back.
