Celtic have a crucial transfer window ahead as they need to add reinforcements in almost every department. Lennon will have a lot on his plate, and Celtic haven’t had the best of starts in the transfer window as they fumbled on the signing of David Turnbull.
One area where they desperately need to add options now is right back. Mikael Lustig recently accepted a move to Belgian outfit Gent. Therefore as things stand, young Anthony Ralston is the only right back in the first team. Ralston was the third choice option for the most parts last season.
Adam Matthews to the rescue
The Hoops have been linked with plenty of right backs in the past year, but they haven’t been able to secure a move for anyone right now. One player which they can look to bring in and someone who might not need a lot of persuasion to join is former Celtic full-back, Adam Matthews.
The Wales international was recently released by Sunderland and is available on a free contract. The fullback made 150 appearances for the Hoops during his first stint and contributed with five goals and 22 assists. He left Celtic in 2015 to join Sunderland.
Lennon’s comments on Matthews from 2013
He might not be the same player as he was four years ago, but Matthews is still a dependable right back. Moreover, he knows what it takes to perform at this level, and he has even played under Lennon before. In February 2013, Lennon had lavished huge praises on him. The manager said (BBC), “He’s a fantastic player. Coming to a big club like this, as a relative unknown, it has not fazed him. He’s getting better and better. Some of his games in Europe this season have been like a seasoned veteran.”
What can Matthews bring to the table?
The fullback struggled with injury last term and managed to make just 28 appearances for the Black Cats last season. He contributed with one goal and seven assists and looked reliable whenever he was on the pitch.
The 14 time Wales international has impressive pace, and he has that physical side to his game, which is essential in the Premiership. Matthews also showcases good work rate, and his experience of playing in big games earlier will come in handy. It’s true that because of injuries he might not be the same player anymore, but Celtic’s right back situation is so dire that they might have to pick someone from the streets to fill in that position if they don’t sign anyone soon. On a free transfer, Matthews will be a top signing as he is still 27 and has a decent amount of football left in him.
