But, if there is one player Jurgen Klopp should definitely go after this summer, it’s RB Leipzig superstar Timo Werner. The German international has been a subject of long-term interest from the Reds, and his current contract at Red Bull Arena expires at the end of next season. Hence, there is a possibly Liverpool could sign him for a cut-fee this summer.
Werner is one of the best players in the Bundesliga
Since joining RB Leipzig from his boyhood club VfB Stuttgart back in 2016, Werner has become a real asset for Die Roten-Bullen. He has been a consistent goal-scorer and notched up 114 appearances for the club across all competitions.
In those 114 matches, Werner has been involved in a whopping 88 goals – considerably more than any other Leipzig player in the club’s short history. This past season, Werner plundered 16 goals and provided nine assists in 30 matches, helping Leipzig secure a third-place finish in the league.
But, the German international is reportedly keen on leaving Leipzig, making it unlikely that he will sign a contract extension anytime soon. The factory giants reportedly value him at €60 million, but they could be forced to negotiate, knowing that they could lose him for absolutely nothing should they fail to get him to agree to a new deal.
What can Werner bring to the table?
Werner is mostly known for his pace that makes him a scourge on the counter. He is also an aggressive striker and is always willing to win back possession for his team.
However, what makes him Werner such a feared attacker in Europe is the fact that he is difficult to be shrugged off the ball and is also blessed with technical qualities. Also, the 23-year-old is a versatile attacker, who can also be utilised in the wide attacking positions.
Why should Liverpool make a move for Werner?
Werner is a pressing machine and is also quite a feisty attacker – making him a tailor-made fit for Klopp’s changed gegenpressing style of play at Anfield. Furthermore, he is a productive striker, as his remarkable scoring tally suggests. And at the age of 23, he can turn out to be a smart long-term investment for Liverpool.
However, the Reds are destined to face stiff competition from Bayern Munich, who are willing to wait until 2020 before making a move for German international.
