According to the reports from Daily Mail, Celtic are reportedly leading the race to sign Bolton Wanderers’ young talent Luca Connell. Celtic can sign him for as little as £240,000 as the player only signed an academy contract extension recently with Bolton who are in administration right now.
Bolton got relegated to the League One, and they are set to begin with a 12 point penalty which would make it tough for them to even survive in the English third tier. All this can work in Celtic’s favour as they are likely to land the 18-year-old star on a bargain. A handful of English clubs were also interested in his signature including some Premier League teams as well.
Connell enjoyed a breakthrough campaign for his side as he managed to make 12 appearances for his Bolton in all competitions. At just 18, he often looked like their brightest player on the pitch, and it was no surprise to see some top flight clubs chasing him.
What will Connell bring to Parkhead?
The Irishman is a defensive midfielder who can play as a left back or as a left midfielder as well. He played his first few games as a left wing-back, but after a few games, it became clear that his on the ball qualities could be utilised much better in a central role. Connell can carry the ball from the back and pick out his man with some neat passes. The youngster can form a good base of attack for his team, dictating play from deep areas.
One for the future
However, he is still quite young, and he would need to work on the physical side of his game as well. If Celtic go on to sign him, then we don’t see him as a first-team option straight away.
He might have to bide some time with the youth and reserve team before he could settle in the Premiership. Nevertheless, once he does that, he can be a top player to have as is showcasing immense potential at 18.
Good move for everyone
Celtic have had a history of acquiring and promoting young players and signing this u-19 Ireland international could be a big boost for the club as he is touted to have a big future. For the price, it is almost a no brainer for them to go all out and secure his signature. Connell too should be delighted to move to Glasgow as he is more likely to get first team chances at Celtic Park than at Premier League clubs.
