According to the latest reports from the Sun, Manchester City are willing to sell Brazilian fullback Danilo in the summer, which will open the door for them to sign Juventus’ full back Joao Cancelo. Pep Guardiola is keen to bring on a new player who will compete for places with Kyle Walker. Juventus are said to be ready to cash in on £50m rated Cancelo if the opportunity arrives.
So Cancelo coming to Etihad clearly depends on whether Danilo can find any suitors in the summer. Inter Milan have already shown their interest in the Brazilian fullback, but City wants to recoup the full £25m they paid to Real Madrid two years back. Juventus are also said to be monitoring Danilo’s situation right now.
Cancelo would definitely be an upgrade over Danilo, and we think that he would even start over Kyle Walker who has turned out to be quite error-prone in the last few seasons. Guardiola depends heavily on his fullbacks to provide width on the pitch, and they often play incredibly high up the field.
The Portuguese international is an attack-minded fullback, and he should settle in well in Guardiola’s system. Cancelo is still just 25, and he is currently at the peak of his career and has his best years ahead of him.
What will Joao Cancelo add to Pep Guardiola’s team?
Blessed with impressive pace and dribbling skills, Cancelo can even turn out as an outright winger given his attacking talent. He might have to improve on his final product, but that is something which he can work on. Defensively too he is known as a committed fullback, and he can be a better defensive option than Kyle Walker.
However, adjusting to the Premier League might take some time, and he might be a bit taken aback by the intensity and pace of the league. But once he settles in, he has the talent to be a top class full back.
Win-Win for everyone?
Around £20 million plus Danilo for Cancelo seems like a decent bet to us as the Portuguese international has the ability to be the best right back in the business. It remains to be seen whether Juventus would take such a deal. If that happens, then it would be win-win for everyone involved as the Serie A champions are looking to cash in on Cancelo. In Danilo, they will even get a decent enough replacement as well.
