According to the latest reports from Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a deal for Bruno Fernandes as a possible replacement for Christian Eriksen who recently announced that he is looking for new challenges. Spurs are heavily linked with Argentine international Giovani Lo Celso, but the report adds that Spurs haven’t been able to convince Real Betis to sell the midfielder for €70m. As a result, they are shifting their focus towards Portuguese international Fernandes.
Fernandes has been linked with plenty of English clubs in the past few months, and he even went on to admit that playing in the Premier League has been his childhood dream. The 24-year-old shot into limelight as he scored a whopping 32 goals from midfield and provided 18 assists as well last season.
We don’t expect him to produce similar numbers in the Premier League, but if he even comes anywhere close to that, then he would have done his job. Tottenham Hotspur have been silent in the past two transfer windows, and we expect them to go after players in the summer after Mauricio Pochettino brought them on the cusp of glory in the Champions League.
Spurs are unlikely to find it easy to bring him as Liverpool, Manchester United are also said to be in the mix for the playmaker.
What will Fernandes add to Pochettino’s team?
The Portuguese international is a complete package, and he has decent pace and dribbling skills along with strength and stamina, which would help him in the Premier League. However, it’s his footballing intelligence and ability to finish off moves, which makes him stand out. The 24-year-old is as good as a striker when he gets onto the ball in and around the box, and the midfielder even knows how to pick out the right pass in the final third.
The Sporting CP midfielder might not have as much time as he finds himself in the Portuguese division, but we still think that he would be able to make a massive impact for Spurs.
Why Should Spurs go all out for him?
Christian Eriksen has been one of the most crucial elements in Pochettino’s side, and he needs to find an established player who can replace him straight away. The kind of form which Fernandes showed last season, there are not many attacking midfielders who can match his numbers. No doubt bringing him in would be a significant coup for Spurs. The latest news of them moving away from Lo Celso to Fernandes is definitely a good one, but it remains to be seen whether they would be able to beat their competition.
