According to the latest reports from the TalkSport, Manchester United have moved ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and others in their pursuit of Leicester City’s attacking midfielder James Maddison. The reports mention that the attacker is rated at £60m and United have made him their top priority for the summer.
It is no surprise that some of the top clubs are after Maddison after his productive season in the Premier League. The former Norwich player impressed in the Championship and was quite easily the standout player in the English second tier which earned him a £20m move to Leicester City last summer.
Maddison’s rise seems to be going at a great pace as in just one season in the English top flight; heavyweight clubs like Spurs and United are targeting him. Tottenham haven’t made any signings in the past two transfer windows, but we expect the club to go after specific targets in the summer.
Spurs had a topsy turvy season as they were fighting toe to toe with Manchester City and Liverpool until January in the Premier League. But they fell off dramatically and only managed to earn the fourth spot over Arsenal by just a point. However, their highlight would be their Champions League run as they reached their first final in the history of the competition.
Does Tottenham need Maddison?
Tottenham have one of the best playmakers in the Premier League in the form of Christian Eriksen, and the Danish star has often done the star turn for his side. However, he is set to enter in the final year of his contract and is being linked with a move away from the club. The contract talks with him have stalled in the past few months, and maybe Pochettino will lose him with Real Madrid interested.
Why Should Spurs step up their pursuit?
In such a case, Maddison will be an ideal replacement for the Dane as he has shown that he is ready to take on the bigger challenges of the Premier League. The Englishman managed seven goals and seven assists for the Foxes, and he would slot in well in the Spurs system. The 22-year-old’s best years are yet to come, and with his potential, he can be a massive coup for Spurs.
Manchester United will be desperate to get things right in this transfer market, but they don’t have the lure of the Champions League anymore. We feel that Spurs should step up their pursuit of Maddison and look to sign him in the summer as he can be a long term prospect for the club.
