In a recent interview mentioned by the Daily Mirror, Liverpool forward Divock Origi said, “There’s an offer for a new contract on the table.
“We will see after the international games, but I think there will be talks with the club.”
Origi’s Heroics For Liverpool Last Season
The Belgian striker was the hero for Jurgen Klopp’s side when he scored in the 87th minute of the UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur which helped Liverpool secure a 2-0 win at the Spanish capital last weekend. He has also scored many important goals as a substitute for the Reds during the recently concluded Premier League campaign.
His last-minute goal against Everton has made him a fan-favourite at Anfield and so it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear about Klopp wasting no time in offering Origi a chance to extend his stay at Merseyside.
The Belgian forward has featured in 22 matches for Liverpool this term, scoring eight goals while creating two assists in all competitions. The 24-year-old is also vastly experienced at the international level having represented Belgium in 26 matches while registering three goals for them thus far.
What Does The Belgian Sensation Offer On The Pitch?
Origi has enough pace and power in his locker to cause a lot of problems for the opposition defenders. He is a decent option off the bench as he is capable of winning matches for his team in the final quarter of games. He has scored a few late goals for Liverpool which kept them in the title race, and he even managed to find the back of the net in the Champions League final.
Origi’s Contract Extension: Good Move For All Parties?
Maybe, he has earned the right to be offered a new short-term contract. However, one can argue whether Origi is good enough to start for the Reds in the upcoming campaign.
Either way, he will undoubtedly improve Klopp’s overall squad depth as long as he is happy to play a reserved role at Anfield. Thus, it seems like a good move for both the player and the club as they try to mount another title charge in the Premier League next season.
