According to a recent report by Il Corriere della Sera (via Calciomercato), Manchester United are eager to secure the signature of Gianluigi Donnarumma from AC Milan and have made contact with the player agent, Mino Raiola to discuss a potential move later this summer. The same source has revealed that the Italian keeper is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s number one target to replace David De Gea at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils would have to cough up a fee between €55m and €60m to bring him to England in this offseason.
Donnarumma’s Mixed Campaign In The Italian Top-Flight
Donnarumma had to experience a bitter end to the Serie A season last month as AC Milan narrowly missed out on a top 4 finish which means that they won’t be a part of the UEFA Champions League next season.
It was a disappointing end to an otherwise solid campaign for Donnarumma as he was able to secure regular football for Gennaro Gattuso’s side, featuring in 36 of their 38 league matches in the recently concluded Italian top-flight season.
The 20-year-old made 39 appearances for the San Siro outfit in the last campaign, shipping in 32 goals while securing 15 clean sheets in all competitions. The former Napoli youth product is improving his overall game with each season so it could prove to be a fantastic signing for Man United if they can lure him to Old Trafford ahead of the new season.
At such a young age, the Italian goalie has shown great maturity in between the sticks over the past couple of years. He has completely transformed his game for the better and is now widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in European football. Donnarumma has represented Italy in 12 international matches and could be in line to play an essential role for his country in the coming years.
What Will The Italian Youngster Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
The Castellammare di Stabia born goal protector has all the skillset needed to be a successful keeper at the highest level. He has sensational reflexes and tends to take up the right positions when shielding the AC Milan goal. His handling of the ball and maturity to perform under pressure has put him among the best goalkeepers in the Serie A. However, Donnarumma’s ball-distribution needs to improve if he wants to win trophies for a top club like Man United.
Will Donnarumma Be A Good Fit For The Red Devils?
However, the jury is still out on whether he can cope with the physical toll of English football. Even then, Donnarumma is still worth recruiting as he could prove to be an excellent fit for Solskjaer’s style of play at Old Trafford. Losing a player of De Gea’s calibre won’t be easy for any team, but signing Donnarumma could go a long way in softening the blow of losing the Spaniard this summer.
